LA’s The Gotham Group has picked up rights to adapt a pair of soon-to-launch YA novels for the screen.
Due out this month from New York’s Simon & Schuster, Their Vicious Games (pictured) marks the debut of author Joelle Wellington. Drawing inspiration from The Hunger Games and Gossip Girl, it centers around a Black teen who loses her Ivy League college acceptance when she gets into a fight. She decides to enter a dangerous elite competition to get back onto the admittance list.
That Night in the Library, the second book from writer Eva Jurczyk, is about seven students who must learn to tap into the unlikely power of books to save themselves from a killer on the loose. Indie publisher Sourcebooks will release it next spring or summer.
Gotham specializes in turning teen and YA books into films. Some of its popular book-based projects include the dystopian Maze Runner trilogy, Nickelodeon’s fantasy feature The Spiderwick Chronicles and Disney+ musical Stargirl.
Next up on its slate, Gotham is co-producing the live-action Percy Jackson and the Olympians series with Disney Branded Television and 20th Television. Based on the best-selling book franchise by Rick Riordan, this eight-part series will hit Disney+ in 2024.
