Cottonwood Media and ZDF are getting the jump on season two of tween series Spellbound, putting it into production in August, just ahead of the first season’s fall premiere on France Télévisions, Hulu and ZDF.
Cottonwood will co-produce another 12 episodes of the live-action series with ZDF, ZDF Studios and Opéra National de Paris, bringing it up to a total of 39 x half hours. France Télévisions and Hulu were in the co-pro mix on the first season, but are not attached to season two.
Spellbound was created by Jill Girling and Lori Mather, the masterminds behind Find Me in Paris, another Cottonwood hit that has aired all over the world on channels and platforms including on Disney+, RAI and CBC.
Spellbound follows an American teenager who moves to France to study at a prestigious ballet school. Her dance dreams get more complicated, however, when she discovers that she’s also a witch. In season two, Cece swears to leave magic behind to focus on ballet, but new secrets and friends compel her to try and balance both worlds.
Federation Kids & Family (the sales arm of Cottonwood’s parentco Federation Studios) and ZDF Studios are jointly managing worldwide sales for the show. They sold season one to Canadian public broadcaster CBC in April, and are looking to move it into more regions and close presales for the second season.
