The MetaGuardians IP boasts more than 10,000 characters, and the studio wants to turn it into digital comics, shorts and a new game.

The mass-media hype around NFTs may have worn off, but it seems they are still attractive to some companies looking for new kids IPs.

Spain’s DeAPlaneta has acquired two-year-old NFT brand MetaGuardians and plans to build a franchise beyond the blockchain around its 10,000-plus superhero characters. It acquired MetaGuardians directly from creators Antubel Moreda, Bernal Moreda and Kiefer Johnston, who have agreed to stay involved as the brand expands.

DeAPlaneta’s first new piece of content will be a six-edition digital comic book series (available as NFTs) that follows the heroes as they team up in the metaverse to fight evil villains. The studio is also developing a series of digital short films and a video game, and the long-term goal is to develop licensing partnerships for physical and digital products.

DeAPlaneta first partnered with MetaGuardians’ creators last year to promote the brand. But this acquisition will allow the company to more fully leverage its international audience, according to a release.

Companies including Sesame Workshop and Funko have signaled their continued interest in NFTs lately, while others (TIME’s kids and family division and Exile Content Studios) got into the space much earlier with IP incubation in mind.
