Montreal-based nonprofit Youth Media Alliance (YMA) has announced the 2023 winner of its Andra Sheffer Scholarship.

This year’s award goes to Roxy Macdonald, who is looking to leverage her screenwriting talent in the kids media industry. She is currently enrolled in the Children’s Media program at Centennial College in Toronto.

Macdonald is the eighth recipient of the annual scholarship, which launched in 2016 and recognizes excellence in Canadian students who are looking to pursue a career in kids entertainment. Past winners have included Jadiel Dowlin (Dino Dana) and Maia Jae Bastidas (Lady Ada’s Secret Society).

Macdonald is originally from Nova Scotia and graduated from the University of King’s College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Her portfolio includes writing/blogging and viral content creation. She has also worked with children directly in after-school programs and child care.

As part of the scholarship, Macdonald will attend this year’s Kidscreen Summit in February and the Banff World Media Festival in June. She will also receive a US$3,100 travel grant, a one-year subscription to Kidscreen magazine, and mentoring from YMA members.

Andra Sheffer, former CEO of the Independent Production Fund, was on the selection committee with YMA executive director Chantal Bowen, TVOKids acquisitions officer Agustin Guevara Mastretta, Shaw Rocket Fund president/CEO Agnes Augustin and Big Bad Boo president/co-founder Shabnam Rezaei.
