From beloved brand reboots to new productions—here are the top-10 Kidscreen Daily articles of the year.

Prodcos dusting off beloved IPs and projects that spotlight inclusion attracted the most attention this year from Kidscreen readers (and the internet alike). Join us as we look back at our top-10 most-read stories.

The return of Zodiak Kids’ Totally Spies! after eight years was Kidscreen.com’s most-read story of 2022, according to our analytics, a win that likely got a boost from both fans and industry readers. Similarly, IPs like SWAT-KATS, My Little Pony and Monster High also ranked high, thanks to social-driven fan interest and industry curiosity, as well as Snoop Dogg’s foray into the children’s content industry.   

But our readers were also eager to read about how peers are tackling subjects of disability and inclusion, such as the film adaptation of the hit novel Out of My Mind and, interestingly, the PBS KIDS rebrand, which saw the pubcaster aim for a more inclusive look and approach to better reflect their audience.

#1: Gulli and Discovery Kids revive Totally Spies! by Jeremy Dickson

The French broadcaster partnered with Discovery Kids LatAm to co-produce a seventh season of Zodiak Kids’ 2D-animated series Totally Spies! 

#2: SWAT-KATS get back in action with Toonz by Elizabeth Foster

The Indian prodco teamed up with Christian and Yvon Tremblay to produce the SWAT-KATS Revolution reboot, based on the brothers’ classic SWAT-KATS animated series. 

#3: It’s game on for Total Drama as BBC co-commissions new seasons by Sadhana Bharanidharan

It was a pretty hot deal for FreshTV and the industry took the (click) bait: In addition to co-commissioning a two-season revival of the prodco’s enduringly popular series Total Drama with Warner Bros. Discovery, the British pubcaster picked up all six past seasons of the series in a deal brokered by CAKE. 

# 4: Announcing the 2022 Kidscreen Awards winners! by Jeremy Dickson

After the last awards were held virtually, the Kidscreen Awards returned this year to hand out trophies in person. Netflix was the big star of this year’s awards, taking home the most trophies— 15 to be precise. The streamer’s preschool show Trash Truck scored the most wins for a single title.

#5: Out of My Mind movie adaptation heads to Disney+ by Sadhana Bharanidharan

The SVOD is preparing a live-action film adaptation of the best-selling novel Out of My Mind by children’s author Sharon Draper, which spotlights people with disabilities by telling the story of a young girl with cerebral palsy.

# 6: Hasbro saddles up new My Little Pony content by Ryan Tuchow

Netflix ordered an animated series and two specials based on the franchise’s five magical ponies.

# 7: Mattel targets collectors with resurrected Monster High toy line by Cole Watson

The prodco brought its Monster High fashion doll line back to life, reviving it for the first time since 2018. New versions of the brand’s original 2010 dolls have been available at Walmart since May.

#8: PBS KIDS rebrands to signal greater accessibility, inclusivity by Andrea Hernandez

For the first time in two decades, the broadcaster updated its logo—leaving out the longstanding mascot Dash—and created new mascot characters in an effort to be more accessible and inclusive. 

#9: Streamers rule Kidscreen Awards nominations by Jeremy Dickson

Netflix took home the lion’s share of nominations, with a total of 16 shortlisted entries. Hot on the heels of the streamer is Sesame Workshop with a dozen nods. The nominations were announced in November, and the winners will be revealed at the Kidscreen Summit in February. 

#10: Snoop Dogg launches music-based SEL series by Sadhana Bharanidharan

Ain’t nuthin but a kids-TV thang. The rap icon teamed up with producer Claude Brooks and singer-songwriter October London to create an animated series on YouTube featuring a group of colorful canines who sing, dance and rap.
