The Witch Mountain film franchise is heading down a new path for its next installment—as a Disney+ pilot.

The streamer has greenlit this co-pro from Disney Branded TV, ABC Signature and LA-based Davis Entertainment (Jungle Cruise) to join its growing slate of live-action projects.

Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard) are penning the scripts and will executive produce alongside director Augustine Frizzell (Euphoria) and Disney’s Gary Marsh.

The franchise dates back to 1975 film Escape to Witch Mountain, based on a same-name book by Alexander Key that was published in 1968 by the Westminster Press. It’s about a pair of teens who have paranormal abilities like telekinesis and telepathy.

The original movie was expanded into a trilogy with Return from Witch Mountain (1978) and Beyond Witch Mountain (1982). And Disney’s most recent reboot, Race to Witch Mountain, dates back to 2009.

Bryce Dallas Howard (pictured) is attached to star in the Disney+ project as a devoted mother who has lost her husband to mental illness.

Disney Branded TV has really been leaning into book adaptations lately; its current pipeline also includes upcoming Disney+ film Out of My Mind and tween series The Slumber Party.
