Music rights manager 440Hz is launching a new division to help producers and broadcasters crack the music side of the business, and it is already working on shows heading to Netflix and Disney+.

The Paris-based company’s new music supervision department will recruit composers and bands, negotiate rights clearances and oversee music production. It was launched in an effort to streamline and simplify rights management and artist relationships, said managing director Charles Braud in a release.

In the first of two family-friendly projects out of the gate, the new division is looking for a score composer for the live-action series Home Sweet Rome, about a 13-year-old who moves to Rome with her dad and Italian popstar stepmom. 440Hz will also clear rights for existing music to be performed by the characters in the series. The show from Italy’s Red Monk and Canada’s First Generation is set to premiere next year.

The division’s second initial project involves overseeing music on an upcoming Steve Box (Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit) film for Netflix. France’s Superprod is animating the yet-untitled film announced in June, which follows a gang of stray cats trying to pull off the greatest robbery of their (nine) lives. 440Hz will find and hire the composer, create the show’s musical tone alongside Box, clear rights and produce music.

The company’s success with animated projects for kids motivated the new division launch, Braud tells Kidscreen. It supervised the music for Mama K’s Team 4 from UK’s Cake and South Africa’s Triggerfish and that opened the company’s eyes to the global market for its services.

Animation has been a focus for 440Hz from the get-go because of the international nature of this market segment,” says Braud. “[Our] success sparked the creation of our new music supervision department, to meet a growing demand fueled by the development of the global streaming platforms.”

Launched in 2020, 440Hz has been handling music rights and releasing soundtracks for a growing roster of kidco clients, including La Cabane and Thuristar’s Mush-Mush and the Mushables, Toon Factory’s Sardines in Outer Space and Superprod’s Pat the Dog (pictured).

Its new supervision division has also signed on to manage music for the upcoming Disney+ film A Zone to Defend and the upcoming Netflix series Transatlantic, both for adults.
