Nickelodeon is heading back to school, greenlighting a second Monster High movie from Mattel just a few weeks after the first film’s rollout.
Both pics are based on Mattel’s franchise about the kids of famous monsters attending school together. Production on the as-yet-untitled second movie will start in January and deliver in time to air on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ next year. The brand targets kids ages seven to 14.
Monster High used to be one of Mattel’s biggest brands, and at one point it was valued at US$1 billion. But sales declined between 2016 and 2018, and the franchise got shelved.
Mattel has been working hard lately on a revitalization strategy for Monster High—which started as a line of fashion dolls in 2010—rolling out a new toy range at mass retail this summer.
Nickelodeon greenlit live-action musical Monster High: The Movie last year, and it was the top kids and family movie on Paramount+ when it premiered on October 6, netting more than four million views during its first weekend on the linear channel.
Nick is also gearing up to start airing a new Monster High (26 x 22 minutes) animated series on October 28 that it co-produced with Mattel Television.
