Fool & Scholar Productions launches first kids podcast

Known for its adult titles, the audio prodco is launching its first podcast for younger listeners tomorrow and thinking creatively about consumer products.

Podcast creator Fool & Scholar Productions is pivoting from its usual adult target demo to deliver its first-ever kids audio drama podcast with a consumer products approach focused on interactivity.

Aimed at kids ages three to 12, The Boar Knight (16 x 15 minutes, pictured) chronicles the adventures of a wild boar, a gnome and a dwarf, who face dangers in the magical kingdom where they live more or less harmoniously.

Fool & Scholar has produced multiple fiction podcasts for adults, such as Don’t Mind: Cruxmont and The White Vault, which have triggered more than 20 million downloads combined, according to the company. It’s expanding into kids podcasts to open up new consumer products opportunities that aren’t available in the adult market, say Travis Vengroff and Kaitlin Statz, Fool & Scholar’s producer/screenwriter duo.

The studio is in talks to create coloring books and The Boar Knight music albums—a natural first step in the brand’s L&M strategy because it encourages kids to be creative and imaginative like the characters in the podcast.

Fool & Scholar has learned that podcasts can be tricky to monetize in the licensing space; the apparel it launched for its adult titles has never really taken off, say Vengroff and Statz. The company has a Patreon account with more than 2,000 fans who directly sponsor its productions, but cracking into consumer products is the key to building out that revenue.

Beyond publishing, the company is looking for partners in other categories that let kids be creative and interact with the brand.

Vengroff and Statz created The Boar Knight with adventure punk artist Peter Pepper. Vengroff is also the director and producer of the podcast, which launches tomorrow on all major platforms.
