Do NFTs hold as much power as Castle Grayskull? Mattel certainly thinks so. The toyco is partnering with Florida-based OnChain Studios to launch a collection of 120,000 NFTs based on its 40-year-old Masters of the Universe IP.

The first wave of 40,000 are slated to drop in November through OnChain’s NFT and gaming platform, Cryptoys. Each pack is priced at US$39.99 and contains one of four characters: He-Man, Battle Cat, Tri-Klops or Evil-Lyn.

After consumers unbox their NFTs, they can play with them in one of the Cryptoys online experiences. OnChain’s first game on the platform, The Block, lets players use their digital collectibles to walk, run and jump around a level in order to see how the character moves. The developer is aiming to build out the experience with different sets of mini-games.

To increase the value of the collection, every hero in a wave has seven unique skins to collect that range in rarity and stats. The rarer the skin, the more power the NFT has in the Cryptoys games.

OnChain will roll out two additional waves of 40,000 Masters of the Universe Cryptoys through January 2023. Mattel inked a multi-year licensing deal with the NFT developer in June, and plans to bring more of its iconic properties to the platform.

In other news at the toyco, Mattel Television is moving forward with production on seasons 27 and 28 of 2D-animated preschool series Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go (52 x 11 minutes). The division has confirmed the series will continue to be co-produced with Canada’s Nelvana, and the latest instalments should deliver in 2023. Broadcasters have not been confirmed yet, but seasons 25 and 26 aired on a long list of global channels, including Canada’s Treehouse TV, ABC Kids in Australia, NHK in Japan and Milkshake and Nick Jr. in the UK.
