Market Mashup: Toonz, Toon2Tango, DeAPlaneta

As MIPCOM draws closer, Toonz partners on another series, GOBELINS is supporting African animation, and Leonine had acquired a majority stake in an animation studio.

Toonz
Toonz Media Group is joining forces with China Bridge Content on a new 2D-animated comedy series called Peaches & Creaminal (52 x 11 minutes), starring an outspoken eight-year-old girl and her talking bulldog. They travel to a new country each episode, and find themselves in trouble due to Creaminal’s rambunctious canine behavior. China Bridge founder Josh Selig co-created the series with his wife Chen Chen (Luo Bao Bei) and penned the pilot scripts with writer Billy Lopez (Wonder Pets!).

Mounia Aram
Paris-based Mounia Aram Company has partnered with the GOBELINS animation school to launch an educational program designed to teach African creatives CG animation skills. The initiative will kick off In July 2023, with a school in Ghana running for 15 days. This new program is an extension of GOBELIN’s work with Netflix, which has been providing scholarships for African animation students for the last five years.

Toon2Tango
Germany’s Leonine has acquired a minority stake in Munich-based animation studio Toon2Tango in a move to expand its kids distribution business to also include development and production work. Leonine, which produces live-action and animated content for adults, acquired a 25.1% share in Toon2Tango, which launched three years ago. The studio has since developed and produced shows such as CG-animated Agent 203, which Super RTL acquired last year. Toon2Tango will be at MIPCOM shopping animated series Lily of Fawonia and its first-ever live-action project, Macara’s Curse.

DeAPlaneta
Expanding into the NFT-first market, the Spanish company has teamed up with NFT brand WonderPals, with plans to build it into a 360-degree franchise. WonderPals launched last year as a character-driven collection spanning everything from a chef to someone in a tiger costume. Existing WonderPals apparel, food and stationery products are already available in the brand’s e-commerce store. And now DeAPlaneta will become its worldwide sales agent, working to create a WonderPals consumer products program that includes books and collectibles.
