MGM has signed its first licensing deals for upcoming live-action series Wednesday, which launches worldwide on Netflix this fall.
Hot Topic (apparel), Rubie’s (costumes) and Funko (figures) are on board to get things started in consumer products for the young adult series about grim teenager Wednesday Addams. These three deals are for products in the US. Costumes are available now, and apparel will launch in October and November.
The new project is looking to tap into multi-generational nostalgia for the Addams Family brand, which originally launched in the ’60s as a TV series; then was revived by three ’90s-era live-action feature films; and has more recently spawned a pair of family-friendly animated movies that were released theatrically in 2019 and 2021.
MGM is zeroing in on the tween/teen audience for the first time with this new series and merch line to try and turn what is a natural Halloween brand into a year-round franchise with additional licensees, says EVP of global consumer products and experiences Robert Marick.
Wednesday premieres on November 23 and sees its namesake Addams offspring starting at a new school, where she has to figure out her growing psychic powers and solve a 25-year-old murder mystery. Netflix greenlit the eight-episode series in February 2021, and it marks a transition to TV for iconic film director Tim Burton.
