The Jim Henson Company and STEAM-focused toyco GoldieBlox are developing Gizmo Girls, an animated series aimed at upper preschoolers that serves up a heady mix of math, science and empowerment.

The show’s 11-minute episodes center around three besties who solve problems with the power of DIY, using STEAM-based skills and creativity to tackle a variety of challenges, from growing a prize-winning pumpkin to crocheting a ladder.

Gizmo Girls is created by Anne-Marie Asner, author of the Matzah Ball books—a kidlit series rooted in Jewish culture. Sidney Clifton, Henson’s SVP of animation and mixed media, will oversee the project. Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford (Dinosaur Train) are also on board as executive producers, along with GoldieBlox’s Melissa Schneider and Debbie Sterling.

This collaboration is the newest addition to GoldieBlox’s development slate, which includes a package of animated content based on its Goldie + Friends IP. The company signed a deal with India’s Toonz Media Group in 2020 to produce this branded programming, as well as content for several other IPs focused on STEAM and female empowerment that it has been percolating.

Henson recently partnered with Oregon’s A Kids Company About in July to work on a mixed-media series for six to 11s called A Kids Show About that will center on social issues.
