Multiple prodcos are taking a horrifying trip to Zombie Town, a live-action adaptation of R.L. Stines’ 2012 tween mystery novel.
Canada’s Trimuse Entertainment, India’s Toonz Media Group and LA-based Lookout Entertainment and Viva Pictures have all signed on as executive producers on the project, while Viva will also serve as the feature-length film’s distributor.
Zombie Town is set to premiere in theaters across the United States in December and will head to streamers Hulu in the US and ABC iview early next year.
In the book, 12-year-olds Mike and Karen go to see a horror movie called Zombie Town at the local cinema. When the movie’s cast of zombified creatures begin to exit the screen and enter real life, the two friends frantically flee through the streets of their hometown and try to warn its citizens of the oncoming horde hungry for human brains.
Directors Peter Leponiotis (The Nut Job, Surly Squirrel) and Nick Copus (Animal Kingdom, Titans) will lead Zombie Town‘s production, while Trimuse is developing the scripts. Production on the film is underway and is being shot in Ontario, Canada. Trimuse’s Paco Alvarez (production and sales manager) and Mark Holdom (VP of acquisitions) negotiated the deal to acquire the rights to Stine’s novel.
While not a Goosebumps or Fear Street series project, Zombie Town is a part of Stine’s horror novel legacy, which have collectively sold more than 400 million copies worldwide. Since its debut in 1992, the Goosebumps brand has spawned several shows, video games and movies. The first film in Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Goosebumps series released in 2015 and generated US$158.3 million at the box office, while the 2018 sequel Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween managed to bring in US$93.3 million.
