Netflix to purchase Aussie animation studio Animal Logic

The studio that produced Happy Feet and The LEGO Movies will support Netflix’s ambition to build a slate of proprietary animated films.

Netflix is set to acquire Australia’s Animal Logic in a strategic move to build out its animation production capabilities and  add more animated films to its content offering.

With studios in Vancouver and LA, Sydney-based Animal Logic’s animated projects include Happy Feet (pictured), The LEGO Movies and the Peter Rabbit films. And it’s no stranger to Netflix—Animal Logic is now animating Ron Howard’s The Shrinking of the Treehorns for the streaming giant.

Netflix has been investing in long-form animation for several years now, rolling out family-friendly films such as Klaus, The Willoughbys and The Sea Beast. The SVOD also has a healthy pipeline of upcoming animated features, including Henson’s Pinocchio and Timeless Films’ Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.

The buyout, which is expected to close later this year (following regulatory approvals), will improve Netflix’s ability to create long-form animation and give it a creative team that can produce some of its biggest animated films, according to a release. But Animal Logic is just one piece of its animation plan—the streamer will also continue to work with other studios around the world to meet its needs.

Animal Logic is to remain independent after the acquisition and will continue to work with filmmakers and other studios to develop and produce kids and family content, according to the release.
