If fire and water were people, what would happen when they meet? Announced yesterday, Pixar’s 27th feature film Elemental will answer that question when it premieres next year.

Set in a city where every resident is based on one of the four elements, the movie revolves around Ember (fire) and Wade (water), who discover that they actually have more in common than they thought.

Pixar unveiled the title and concept art (pictured) yesterday, announcing Peter Sohn as the pic’s director, with Denise Ream producing. They previously worked together on 2015′s The Good Dinosaur. Sohn, a longtime Pixar studio artist, said that his experience growing up in the melting pot of New York as the son of Korean immigrants served as the main inspiration for the story.

Elemental is scheduled to release on June 16, 2023. The studio has not specified yet whether it will be a streamer-first or theatrical debut.

Disney’s 2022 upfront presentation will be held today in New York, marking the first in-person iteration of the event since the pandemic began. It’s expected that the company will release details to advertisers about its recently announced AVOD tier. Stories from the Wall Street Journal and Variety this week indicated that Disney plans to tailor its inventory for family-friendly clients and may exclude preschool programming from the ad-supported tier entirely.
