Cartoon Saloon will oversee global licensing and merchandising for its upcoming Netflix movie My Father’s Dragon.

Since launching in 2019, the studio’s brand development division has managed consumer products business for projects such as The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, Wolfwalkers and The Breadwinner.

My Father’s Dragon is Cartoon Saloon’s fifth feature-length movie. Based on a book by Ruth Stiles Gannett, it tells the story of a young boy who embarks on an adventure to rescue a young dragon.

“Discussions are already well underway with key potential licensees, and we look forward to presenting this evergreen property to a wider audience at the upcoming Licensing Expo,” said Brian Tyrrell, GM of Cartoon Saloon brand development, in a press release.

There is no release date yet, but the 2D-animated movie is expected to premiere on Netflix sometime this year.

Given the nature of streaming releases, licensing and merchandising has remained a considerable challenge for Netflix. But the platform has been making more attempts in recent years to do more business in consumer products. Last year, the company partnered with Walmart for its first-ever digital storefront with a national retailer, selling kids products based on properties like Waffles and Mochi, CoComelon and Ada Twist, Scientist.
