Macmillan adapts podcast for publishing

As kidcos seek new ways to monetize audio content, the publisher is turning a Pinna podcast series for preschoolers into a multi-format book range.

Kids audio streaming service Pinna is teaming up with Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group imprint Farrar, Straus and Giroux to adapt its preschool podcast series Quentin and Alfie’s ABC Adventures (pictured) as a series of kids books.

The first picture book in this preschool-skewing range will launch in early 2023, with additional titles to follow in a variety of formats. Like the podcast, each book will follow along as five-year-old Alfie and his babysitter Quentin embark on playful adventures with a magical sidewalk that takes them to new locations based on a letter of the alphabet. Similar to the original podcast, the book series will introduce preschoolers to the alphabet and early literacy learning.

Randy DuBurke, whose illustrations have appeared in The New York Times and Marvel comics, will write and illustrate the books.

While Pinna has turned brands such as Zeptolab’s Cut the Rope and The Jim Henson Company’s Dinosaur Train into podcasts, it’s a reverse shift for the company to turn one of its audio series into books.

The potential for kids IPs to springboard from the podcast space is a buzzy topic lately, and many companies are testing the still-nascent category for transmedia and franchise potential. Earlier this week, kids podcast producer Wonkybot shared its expansive franchise-building strategy with Kidscreen, and Tinkercast recruited several high-profile execs in January to accelerate its international expansion.
