A new Charlotte's Web miniseries and Sesame Street:The Nutcracker are in the works to broaden WarnerMedia's preschool slate.

WarnerMedia is banking on new animated content from nonprofit Sesame Workshop to help it stand out in the streaming wars.

WarnerMedia has greenlit a new Charlotte’s Web miniseries and a Sesame Street-themed special based on the The Nutcracker. The new productions will join its slate of Sesame projects on HBO Max and the Cartoonito preschool block on Cartoon Network.

Based on E.B. White’s book of the same name, the Charlotte’s Web miniseries targets families and will revolve around the well-known story of a beautiful friendship that blossoms between a pig and a spider. No format details or release date have been announced, but production will begin in the coming weeks.

Sesame is also putting its own spin on The Nutcracker story with Sesame Street: The Nutcracker (pictured), a holiday special for 2022 that focuses on Elmo and his new puppy Tango as they go on a holiday adventure.

The Workshop has been expanding well beyond the Sesame Street brand lately as part of its strategy to remain relevant and find new audiences, according to CEO Steve Youngwood in a previous interview with Kidscreen. Projects along these lines have included animated series Bea’s Block and Mecha Builders for HBO Max, as well as live-action series The Not Too Late Show with Elmo, which premiered on the streamer in 2020.

For its part, WarnerMedia has been focusing on preschool content in the past year with the launch of its Cartoonito block on HBO Max and linear TV. The company greenlit the first-ever Tom and Jerry preschool series as part of this new push, as well as CBC original series Dylan from 9 Story Media Group and Brown Bag Films, about an ambitious dog that wants to try out every career.
