Disney Branded TV reboots Zorro

Currently in development, the series will be one of Gary Marsh's first projects under his new production banner.

It’s been 60 years since Disney first aired its iconic TV western about a masked horseman clad in a black cape. And now, Disney Branded Television (DBTV) is now going back to the well with a Zorro (working title) reboot.

The series is currently in development with John Gertz from Zorro Productions and Disney’s Gary Marsh attached as executive producers. Actor Wilmer Valderrama (pictured) will star as Don Diego de la Vega (a.k.a. Zorro) and also executive produce.

Marsh plans to step back from his role as president and CCO of DBTV at the end of the month, and the Zorro reboot marks his first project under his own production shingle, which is backed by Disney General Entertainment.

The live-action show will be reimagined as a period piece set in Pueblo de Los Angeles—told in a telenovela style, and including all the action, drama, suspense and humor from the original series. Format and target demo had not been finalized at press time

Zorro originally aired from 1957 to 1959, and followed Diego de la Vega and his alter ego for 78 episodes as he defended the poor against military tyrants on his black stallion, Tornado. Through the years, the character has appeared in more than 40 films and 10 TV series.

Disney Branded TV has been jumping on live action lately, just last week greenlighting series Meet the Mayhems, which is in production now and set to premiere next summer. And in November, it acquired the rights to adapt children’s novel Kingston and the Magician’s Lost & Found, penned by Rucker Moses and Theo Gangi, as a live-action feature film.
