Disney Branded Television and playwright/filmmaker David Talbert (Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey) are developing a new original live-action musical series called Madelyn Square Garden.
It revolves around a teenage girl from Mississippi who moves to New York to attend an elite performing arts school, but no further details were available at press time.
Talbert and his wife/business partner Lyn Sisson-Talbert are producing the show through their Golden Alchemy Entertainment banner. As a playwright, Talbert’s accolades include winning the NAACP’s Best Playwright of the Year Award for The Fabric of a Man and the New York Literary Award for Best Playwright of the Year for his musical Love in the Nick of Tyme.
Talbert most recently wrote, directed and produced Netflix’s first original live-action musical Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, which premiered in 2020. Following the success of the movie, Talbert and Sisson-Talbert signed a first-look deal in March to write, direct and produce movies for the streamer. Talbert and Sisson-Talbert also served as EPs on live-action Netflix series Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices.
Madelyn Square Garden is the first development project Disney Branded TV has announced since last Thursday’s news that Ayo Davis will take over from Gary Marsh as president at the end of the year. And Talbert is the third big-name creative talent to join a DBTV project in the past week, following announcements that Home Alone director Chris Columbus has inked a deal to develop action-adventure series House of Secrets and actor/director Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) has signed on to make sci-fi series Sal & Gabi Break the Universe.
