Disney Branded Television and actor/director Eva Longoria (The Boss Baby: Family Business, Desperate Housewives) are developing a new live-action sci-fi series called Sal & Gabi Break the Universe based on a same-name YA book.

The show will center around a Latino teenager who discovers he can travel to alternate universes, and then tries to use his newfound power to bring back his dead mother. Format and delivery details were not available at press time.

Nelson Soler (Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion) will produce and write scripts for the comedy-adventure series that Longoria is developing through her prodco UnbeliEVAble Entertainment, along with its president Ben Spector. Overseeing the project’s development for Disney Branded Television is EVP of creative development and strategy Ayo Davis, Disney Branded Television.

Disney-Hyperion published Sal & Gabi Break the Universe (pictured) by Carlos Hernandez in 2019 under its Rick Riordan Presents imprint. And a sequel called Sal & Gabi Fix the Universe was released in 2020.

Sal & Gabi is just the latest project from Disney that features a Latino story, cast and crew. In January, the company lined up superhero series Ultra Violet & Blue Demon, about a Mexican-American family that uses magical luchador masks to fight crime. And on the film side of things, Pixar rolled out Coco in 2017,  inspired by Mexican culture and starring a mostly Latino cast.
