WarnerMedia’s streamer HBO Max has ordered a new Adventure Time spinoff called Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake (working title). As the name suggests, the half-hour animated series stars two fan-favorite characters from the original series, Fionna and her magical talking cat Cake.
Targeting a young adult audience, Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake focuses on the brand’s older fans. Adam Muto (Adventure Time) is serving as showrunner and executive producer for the 10-episode spinoff, which will be produced by Cartoon Network Studios.
Adventure Time premiered on Cartoon Network in 2010 and ran for 10 seasons until 2018. At its peak, episodes were viewed by more than three million people, and the show ranked number-one in its time slot among boys ages two to 14, according to data from Nielsen. More recently, three hour-long specials aired on HBO Max, with a final special set to launch this fall.
The Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake announcement indicates that well-known brands continue to be a focus at HBO Max. The platform recently greenlit comedy series Tom and Jerry in New York, as well as four new shows based on the Harry Potter and DC brands.
