UK broadcaster Sky Kids has lined up three new projects focused on wellness to help kids learn about mental and physical health.
Kicking things off is a 20 x six-minute series called Clam Brain (pictured) from Banijay-owned Zodiak Kids Studio. The mixed-media show launches July 12 on Sky’s linear channel and NOW streaming service. For kids seven to 12, it features animated characters and real-life celebrities (including Manchester City’s women’s football team and social media star The Doodle Boy) who teach kids exercise and relaxation strategies.
The broadcaster has also ordered five What’s On Your Mind? short films from Fresh Start Media. Developed by the UK Department for Education, the films feature youth mental health ambassador Alex George and a variety of celebs sharing advice on health and dealing with stress. Aimed at kids seven and up, they’re slated to begin airing on July 10 as segments in Sky Kids’ news show FYI: For Your Info.
Lastly, the channel has renewed True to Nature’s relaxation series Dreamflight for a second season (20 x five minutes) that will premiere in September. Titled Dreamflight: Calming Stories, each episode in the new season features different landscapes and animals from around the world, and introduces kids to meditation and mindfulness exercises.
“The last year has been tough on kids,” says Lucy Murphy, director of kids content for Sky UK and ROI. “We’re living through unprecedented times, and those childhood fundamentals we take for granted—like going to school, seeing friends and playing sports—have been stripped away. We know that parents are increasingly looking for content that promotes fitness and wellbeing, and mental health is an essential part of that.”
It’s an apt time for Sky to focus on this type of content since kids are more concerned about wellness and mental health this year than they were in 2020. In fact, several other prodcos and broadcasters have already rolled out a variety of meditation and mindfulness programming to help kids destress.
