Nickelodeon and Awesomeness are turning up the volume with their new live-action musical The J Team. Starring and executive produced by social media star JoJo Siwa, this feature-length film focuses on a young girl working to rediscover her passion for music after being kicked out of her dance troupe.
Tisha Campbell-Martin, Laura Soltis, Julia Marley, Kerrynton Jones and Kiara Romero will star alongside Siwa, and production on the movie is set to begin this month in Vancouver, Canada.
The J Team is the first production to come under the purview of Awesomeness and Nickelodeon live-action film studio head Syrinthia Studer. It will be directed by Michael Lembeck (The Santa Clause 2) and written by Eydie Faye (Fuller House), with Ron French producing and Don Dunn executive producing.
An original soundtrack featuring six new songs from Siwa will be released in tandem with the film. Nick inked an exclusive licensing partnership with Siwa in 2016 and has since launched everything from consumer products inspired by the influencer to a multi-city live concert event.
Viacom Digital Studios acquired Awesomeness in 2018 in an effort to bolster its portfolio. Last year, ViacomCBS’s kids and family division appointed Yolanda Cochran as SVP of live-action long-form production for Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., TeenNick, NickToons and Awesomeness.
