Animation Dingle goes digital

The annual conference is hoping to use the virtual format to reach a larger international audience.

Ireland’s annual Animation Dingle conference is cancelling its in-person plans and going digital.

The two-day event, which typically offers workshops, screenings and awards for animated content in Dingle, Ireland, will now run fully online from March 24 to 25. Organized by Irish prodco JAM Media (Tiara Jones, Jessy & Nessy), the event was cancelled last year because of pandemic concerns, though its awards ceremony was held virtually.

The 2021 online event will feature portfolio reviews, master classes and workshops, networking opportunities, screenings and student awards over the two days.

Now in its ninth year, Animation Dingle typically attracts around 700 students and industry professionals. The hope is that a fully virtual festival will open the event to a wider international audience, according to a statement from John Rice, JAM Media CEO and co-founder of Animation Dingle.

Animation Dingle was one of the first industry events forced to change its plans in 2020—though since then, virtual markets have become the norm as the pandemic continues to prevent gathering in person. Major events including MIPTV, CMC and Annecy all went digital last year, and more recently, The Toy Association cancelled New York Toy Fair.
