Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia and Spanish producer Planeta Junior have just launched a new AVOD channel called KIDZ that’s available via streaming service ATRESplayer.
KIDZ rolled out on December 1 and currently offers more than 1,000 hours of TV and film content aimed at kids ages two to 11. This library features series from Planeta—such as Gormiti, Maya the Bee and Squish—as well as shows that Atresmedia has licensed, including Fireman Sam, Barbie Dreamtopia, Hot Wheels City, Pokémon and Angry Birds.
The two companies plan to add more licensed content from third parties, with a focus on properties from European producers, according to a Planeta Junior spokesperson. They are in active talks with potential content suppliers.
KIDZ is currently only available in Spain, but it will expand to other countries and be available on all devices in the future. The free AVOD can be accessed through ATRESplayer, which has both a free and paid version.
Atresmedia launched the AVOD to reach more kids and grow its own audience, according to a press release.
Planeta Junior has been busy partnering with studios to build up its kids content this year. In September, the Spanish prodco inked a deal with fledgling UK studio Fourth Wall Animation to co-produce two new kids shows. It also invested in LA-based ZAG Entertainment to create new content and build on licensing and merchandising efforts in Spain.
The KIDZ launch comes at a time when many kids prodcos are rolling out their own branded channels to improve discoverability, grow their audience, and build brands as families are seeking free content and don’t mind watching ads.
