Amazon Kids+ is launching its first original piece of content and teaming up with a YouTube kidfluencer for the first time with new special Super Spy Ryan from Sunlight Entertainment and Pocket.watch.
The 30-minute scripted live-action/animated special is an extension of Pocket.watch’s Ryan’s World franchise, and will follow YouTuber Ryan Kaji as he’s transported into a virtual reality world where he and his friends must become super-spies to stop an evil hamster. Super Spy Ryan will premiere November 27 exclusively on Amazon Kids+ in the US, Canada and the UK, before rolling out in Germany and Japan in December.
As part of the content collaboration, Amazon has launched exclusive Ryan’s World Secret Spy action figures and a case that features themed figures and gadgets such as a flashlight and goggles.
Pocket.watch exec produced Super Spy Ryan with producers and creators Shion and Loann Kaji of Sunlight Entertainment. Animation was handled by Japan’s Shin-Ei Animation (Crayon Shinchan).
This pickup comes amidst a round of changes at Amazon Kids+. In September, Amazon rebranded Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, adding new content and educational features to better support kids who are learning at home. The shuffle was implemented to highlight the company’s focus on investing in its youngest users, Amazon said in a statement at the time.
More recently, the subscription service has been building a content team, which now includes former Amazon Studios development and programming exec Michele Hennessy as senior creative exec, and Veronica Pickett as head of original video.
