Nickelodeon gets eco-friendly with Planeta Bala

The digital series, hosted by YouTube star Bala, focuses on sustainability and was created in partnership with The Nature Conservancy.

Nickelodeon Latin America has partnered with The Nature Conservancy for its new eco-focused digital series, Planeta Bala. The show is hosted by singer and YouTube star Isabella de La Torre (known as Bala).

Created and produced by ViacomCBS Digital Studios International (VDSI) Americas, the first season includes 20 episodes and premiered November 4 on YouTube, TrendybyNick.com and IGTV.

Nickelodeon and VDSI Americas worked with The Nature Conservancy to develop episode themes for Planeta Bala, which covers climate change, food and water sustainability and how to build healthy cities. The series builds on a partnership inked between Bala and Nickelodeon Latin America last year. Because the young influencer is passionate about the environment, Nick has worked to incorporate sustainability into her content and CP programs.

Initial consumer products included apparel, accessories, publishing and back-to-school products, which were inspired by Bala’s personal efforts to be more eco-friendly. She travels with a reusable cup to avoid single-use plastics, for example, so Nickelodeon has worked to reduce the amount of packaging used for the line and to create items that are similarly sustainable.

But the company’s efforts to go green don’t stop with Bala. Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS Consumer Products also announced a new partnership with Swiss streetwear brand Franky Spade to launch a sustainable apparel collection inspired by SpongeBob SquarePants. The range is made using natural and “carefully sourced” materials, like heavy cotton, and includes t-shirts and sweaters. Products are available globally (except in the US) online and through Franky Spade retail locations in Switzerland and South Korea.
