Surprise, screen-free toys top kids’ wish lists

Walmart reveals its "Top Rated by Kids Toy List" ahead of a unique 2020 holiday season.
September 3, 2020

Walmart is ready to deck the halls with its “Top Rated by Kids Toy List.” Selected by children, the list features 36 items expected to be a hit this coming holiday season. And screen-free entertainment, surprise toys and products that get kids outside topped the 2020 chart.

The retailer had kids test hundreds of toys before choosing their top picks. Screen-free entertainment was a major theme this year, with Mattel’s Tic Tac Tony and Hot Wheels Sky Crash Tower Track Set, Vtech’s Helping Heroes Fire Station Playset and Spin Master’s Kinetic Sand Sandwhirlz all making the cut.

Kids are also keen on products with an element of mystery. The top surprise products included Moose Toys’ Treasure X Sunken Gold Shark’s Treasure, Spin Master’s Hatchimals Crystal Flyers (pictured) and several products from MGA Entertainment, including the Na! Na! Na! Ultimate Surprise and L.O.L. Surprise Clubhouse Playset.

Additionally, Walmart’s holiday toy list featured a number of energy-burning toys designed to get kids up and moving. Hasbro’s Nerf Fortnite DG, Kid Trax’s Semi-Truck and Trailer Ride On, the Jetson Mars Light Up Kick Scooter and the Jetson Plasma Light Up Hoverboard all made the list with kids.

Other themes evident in the “Top Rated by Kids Toy List” include products inspired by top TV properties, high-tech toys and interactive playthings.

This year’s picks illustrate that, in spite of how much kids’ lives have changed in the wake of COVID-19, their toy preferences are largely the same. Walmart’s 2019 list was driven by unboxing brands, outdoor toys and items inspired by big franchises.

The full list is available online. In order to allow kids to experience the top-rated toys for themselves, Walmart also launched the Walmart Wonder Lab in partnership with New York-based tech company Eko. In addition to engaging with products from the “Top Rated by Kids Toy List,” the Wonder Lab allows kids to digitally play with hundreds of toys available through the retailer.
