Discovery International is unveiling the new Discovery Kids Media unit, created to develop, commission, co-produce and distribute animated and live-action kids content for linear and digital platforms.

EVP and CCO for Discovery Latin America Carolina Lightcap expands her remit, adding the role of general manager for DKM to her responsibilities. Before joining Discovery, Lightcap served as the president of Disney Channels Worldwide and led the launch of Disney Junior.

Danielle Davies  also joined the team as VP of kids content partnerships and revenue. She will be responsible for leading the licensing exploitation for all the content DKM creates, as part of Discovery International’s program sales and consumer products team. Prior to this role, Davies has worked at BBC, Viacom and FremantleMedia Kids & Family, among others, in a distribution, acquisition and rights exploitation capacity.

The first series DKM has signed on to distribute are Mini Beat Power Rockers (pictured), Big Top Academy and Zu & Her Zoo. Mini Beat Power Rockers is the number one show on Discovery Kids Latin America, and was nominated for an International Kids Emmy for Best Animated Program. It is produced in English by MundoLoco, with Juan José serving as executive producer, and is also available in Spanish and Portuguese.

Big Top Academy, meanwhile, is produced by Montreal-based Apartment 11 in association with Discovery Kids and TVOKids, in collaboration with Cirque du Soleil Images (the multimedia production division of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment). It was shot in Montreal in English and is also available in Spanish and Portuguese.

Lastly, Zu & Her Zoo, is a two-time International Emmy-nominated live-action series, produced by Boutique Films. It was shot in Portuguese and is available in English and Spanish.

DKM notes in a press release, that it has more than 15 projects currently in development, but did not shed any further light on what those entail. Additionally, the DKM team will manage Discovery’s participation in joint venture agreements for kids productions, including the recently announced collaboration with Nelvana under the name redknot, which greenlit the Dog & Pony Show and Agent Blinky: Pets of the Universe.
