Turner goes global with Gumball VIP

After a successful trial in the UK, the media conglomerate is releasing its app based on The Amazing World of Gumball in new markets over the next six months.

Turner International is expanding the reach of Gumball VIP, an interactive quiz app that works in tandem with Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball. The app will be available in Italy, the Philippines and Singapore by year’s end, followed by Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Spain, France and the UK in early 2019.

Available for free on the App Store and Google Play, Gumball VIP uses audio-recognition technology to quiz users in real time as they watch episodes of the animated series on Cartoon Network. Correct answers win stars and unlock codes that can be redeemed on the channel’s website for prizes. Turner EMEA and Austrian startup Tonio released the interactive quiz app for a trial-run in the UK last October.

The app was created to help viewers connect to the linear TV series by incorporating a dual-screen digital platform, and ratings for the show have increased by up to 44% from previous comparable periods since it launched. Daily viewership by kids ages 10 to 15 is up 22% year over year and 108% since February 2017. And Gumball VIP cracked the App store’s top-10 list during its trial.

With Gumball now in its sixth season, Turner has ordered a new original animated series from its creative team. Elliott from Earth is a sci-fi sitcom following the adventures of a human boy who ends up living on a spaceship.
