Premium cabler HBO is updating classic Hans Christian Andersen fable The Emperor’s Newest Clothes for the small screen. The 27-minute animated special for kids will debut on HBO on November 15, and then roll out on HBO Family the next day; it will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and streaming platforms run by HBO’s partners.

Written and produced by Sheila Nevins, this whimsical tale tells the story of a vain ruler who lives in a kingdom where he decides everything and everyone agrees with him. This modern take, directed by Simon Wilches-Castro, is animated with musical numbers featuring original songs by Tony Award winner William Finn. It’s produced by Lifeboat Productions and Starburns Industries, and will be distributed by HBO.

The Emperor’s Newest Clothes will join Sesame Workshop’s first new animated series  in a decade in HBO Family’s lineup. Aimed at four – to six-year-olds, Esme & Roy focuses on learning through play and mindfulness in 26 episodes.
