Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has launched the Nickelodeon Chinese Animation Development Project. The five-year project is designed to drive new animation co-productions in and with China.

Viacom will invest in up to two projects each year and, with creative guidance from Nickelodeon, VIMN will also explore the licensing potential of completed projects outside of China. Qualifying projects could include brand new animation titles, new seasons of existing programs or Chinese versions of existing Nickelodeon properties.

Backed by China’s National Radio and Television Administration, the project has already confirmed a collaboration deal with Chinese online entertainment company iQIYI to produce the second season of the original animated series Deer Run (working title).

Viacom and iQIYI launched a strategic partnership last year when they agreed to develop Deer Run. The partnership marked the first time Nickelodeon Asia agreed to co-produce a Chinese original from the development stage. Currently in production, the first season of the 40 x 11-minute CG-animated series is scheduled to premiere on Nickelodeon’s international networks (excluding China) in 2020.

Details for further applications to the Nickelodeon Chinese Animation Development Project will open in 2019.
