Entertainment One (eOne) and Chinese distributor Alibaba Pictures announced plans today to co-produce a new Peppa Pig movie. The full-length pic, entitled Peppa Celebrates Chinese New Year, will mark the character’s first big-screen appearance in cinemas throughout China. Its release is set for February 2019, perfectly timed with the next Chinese New Year, which will celebrate the Year of the Pig.
Inspired by the hit TV show created by UK-based Astley Baker Davies animation studio, the movie will mix live action and animation, targeting young families celebrating Chinese New Year with a focus on traditions like dragon dancing and dumpling wrapping.
Distributed by Alibaba Pictures, Peppa Celebrates Chinese New Year will also feature new characters including Panda twins. And limited-edition panda-themed merchandise will be released through Ali Fish, Alibaba Pictures’ licensing and entertainment arm.
To expand Peppa Pig’s presence in China, eOne recently appointed Alpha Group as the preschool property’s master toy partner, and a line of play sets, figurines and role-play SKUs will launch at Chinese retailers towards the end of this year. eOne has also ramped up its Peppa Pig live-event offerings in China by teaming up with Merlin Entertainments to launch the first Peppa Pig attraction in Shanghai. Beyond CCTV, Peppa Pig is available in China on multiple VOD platforms, including Youku, iQIYI and Tencent.
