Disney Television Animation is producing Baymax Dreams, a series of animated shorts based on its new show Big Hero 6 The Series. Directed by Simon J. Smith (Bee Movie, Penguins of Madagascar, Shrek 4D) the shorts feature the lead robot Baymax dreaming of electric sheep, bedbugs and more Baymaxs. It will debut on the DisneyNOW app and Disney’s YouTube Channel on September 15.
The three x two- to three-minute shorts are being created using San Francisco-based Unity Technologies’ real-time rendering tech that enhances classic animation pipelines by using tools typically employed in the gaming industry.
Unity’s tech allows studios to do layout, animation blending, lighting, VFX, rendering and compositing all in one place at the same time. The techco will continue its collaboration with Disney TVA with a series on hands-on demos and discussions in Vancouver, Canada on August 12 to 16. The sessions include Smith directing an animated scene from the shorts live, the technical supervisor showing the benefits and challenges of real-time workflows and the graphics programmer walking through best practices in shading and lighting.
Big Hero 6 The Series premiered on Disney Channel US, DisneyNOW and Disney VOD platforms on June 9. Disney XD has already ordered a second season of the series that picks up where the Academy Award-winning Disney feature film (garnering more than US$657 million at the global box office) left off.
