The animated film production arm of Warner Bros. Pictures—Warner Animation Group—has secured a partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to produce multiple Dr. Seuss feature films, starting with an adaptation of the classic 1957 children’s book The Cat in the Hat.
Warner Animation Group (WAG) EVP Allison Abbate will lead the partnership, and the company is currently building a team of writers, producers and directors for the projects.
The partnership continues Warner Bros’ existing relationship with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which will see Netflix launch a series based on Green Eggs and Ham co-produced by A Very Good Production, A Stern Talking To, Gulfstream Television and Warner Bros. Animation. (The toon will be distributed by Warner Bros. Television.)
Warner Bros’ new Cat in the Hat film will be the second feature based on the popular children’s book by Theodor Seuss Geisel, following Imagine Entertainment’s 2003’s live-actioner starring Mike Myers. That film was distributed by Universal and DreamWorks. Universal Pictures also has an animated film adaptation of How The Grinch Stole Christmas featuring Benedict Cumberbatch in the works for theatrical release on November 9.
Other WAG films for kids and families currently in production include Smallfoot (September 28, 2018), The LEGO Movie Sequel (February 8, 2019) and S.C.O.O.B. (May 15, 2020).
