Netflix has ordered Rilakkuma and Kaoru, the first stop-motion animated series based on the popular Japanese characters that will premiere globally on the streamer in spring 2019.

Japanese stop-motion animation studio Dwarf (Domo, Komaneko) is producing the first 13 episodes and will be supported by the characters’ original creator, Aki Kondo, for story development. The toon is directed by Masahito Kobayashi, with Japanese stationery company San-X overseeing the project.

Filmmaker Naoko Ogigami (Kamome Shokudo, Close-Knit) will serve as screenwriter to create an all-ages story that will follow Rilakkuma, a soft toy bear who shows up to live with a young woman named Kaoru and spends all day lounging in her apartment.
