Disney Publishing imprint Disney-Hyperion has unveiled a digital home for children’s author Rick Riordan’s literary universe, which includes titles like Percy Jackson and the Olympians as well as The Trials of Apollo and The Kane Chronicles.
The new Read Riordan digital home is available across a number of owned-and-operated third-party digital platforms including ReadRiordan.com, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Replacing existing social media channels associated with the author’s content, the Read Riordan effort will feature images, excerpts, video and stories specific for each online platform. Main hub ReadRiordan.com, meanwhile, will sport constantly refreshed news, articles, quizzes and exclusive content.
Read Riordan is meant to act as an always-on home for the author’s books that will provide fans with content around existing series as well as upcoming books set to be released through the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. Riordan’s middle grade series have sold close to 100 million print copies in the US, and have been published in 37 countries worldwide.
Since merging its book and digital publishing businesses in 2016, the House of Mouse has been making strides to marry storytelling with digital and social platforms. Disney Book Group, for one, works with authors to expand their audiences and connect with fans.
And the timing is right to take advantage of book sales. Print book sales in the US have been climbing since 2013. In fact, NPD Book reports a compound annual growth rate of 2.8% since 2013, with US$674 million in sales for the industry as a whole last year. This print-based sales surge is especially strong in children’s publishing, with US kids print book sales growing faster than the overall print book market, boasting a compound annual growth rate of 5.3% since 2013.
