Warner Bros. Animation has started production on DC Super Hero Girls, a new animated action-comedy series based on the DC Entertainment characters that will premiere on Cartoon Network in 2018.
Produced by Lauren Faust (Super Best Friends Forever, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic) and executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!, Justice League Action), the new series features fresh designs based on well-known characters like Wonder Woman, Supergirl and Batgirl. In the toon, the trio will work to protect the city of Metropolis while fighting against Super-Villains from the DC Universe, including Harley Quinn.
The show builds on the success of the DC Super Hero Girls direct-to-video movies and digital webisodes, which launched in 2015. Aimed at girls ages six to 12, the content features character-driven storylines that explore each superhero’s progression from first discovering her unique ability.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products rolled out new DC Super Hero Girls products earlier this year in support of the franchise. The products included dolls, playsets and role-play items. JAKKS Pacific also recently signed on to create new dress-up items and dolls for the successful line. The retail program for the franchise went global less than a year ago, with a massive expansion that made the products available in more than 35 countries.
The move is part of DC’s continued focus on girl-skewing superhero content, which included last month’s DC Kids Super Hero Month partnership with Mattel and Lego for a promotion focused on digital channels and retail.
