Californian production company Skydance Media has launched an animation division with Madrid-based CGI studio Ilion Animation Studios. The multi-year partnership will include developing and producing a raft of animated feature films and TV shows.
The agreement kicks off with two animated movies currently in development in Spain. The first, slated for a 2019 release, is an as yet-to-be-named project written by Linda Woolverton (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Beauty and the Beast). It follows a girl named Elian as she comes of age and uses magical powers to protect her family from light and darkness. Woolverton is also a producer on the film, along with Skydance’s David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, and Ignacio Perez Dolset and Jose F San Roman from Ilion.
The second film, Luck (working title), is a comedy focused on the way good and bad luck affect people’s daily lives. Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (Kung Fu Panda trilogy, Trolls) are scripting and producing the film alongside the same four producers from Woolverton’s project.
Skydance is behind action movies such as Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. It launched Skydance Television in 2013 and has since released Grace and Frankie, a Netflix Original series starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
Ilion Animation Studios is best known for its film Planet 51 (pictured), released in 2009 starring the voice talents of Dwayne Johnson and John Cleese.
