Roblox shells out big bucks to its 1.7 million creators

The user-generated game platform has hit 1.7 million indie creators, and is now offering them the opportunity to make up to US$1.6 million per year.

In continuing to differentiate itself from myriad kids virtual worlds now in play, California-based Roblox is doling out payments up to seven figures to its 1.7 million independent creators.

The user-generated platform has doubled its payout structure to those creating content for the site, allowing them to make up to US$140,000 per month or US$1.6 million a year. (Originally, indie creators were able to make up to US$50,000 per month.)

Content is produced by users of Roblox Studio, a development engine that allows kids to build immersive 3D multi-player games that are then published and played by the platform’s 48 million monthly visitors. Currently, more than 22 million user-generated online games have been created, and those with the most plays reap the highest monetary rewards for their developers. 

Given the growth of its third-party creator community, which itself has doubled in the last year, Roblox is looking to hire more internal developers and engineers that specialize in cross-platform experiences, particularly of the mobile variety.

Offline, Roblox moved into licensing for the first time this year, launching a toy line in partnership with Jazwares.
