CBBC has commissioned Top Class, a new 15 x half-hour competition series hosted by Scottish comedian and BBC Radio 4 panelist Susan Calman (pictured) that features primary schools across the UK.

Commissioned by CBBC controller Cheryl Taylor, the ITV Studios production will premiere in September. It pits teams comprised of four 10- to 11-year-olds from 16 different schools against one another in a series of educational question-and-answer rounds.

In each episode, two teams will square off in a variety of themed quizzes, ranging from pet subjects to general news. Students can also nominate one of their teachers to play for them during a special pop culture-based round.

All questions are derived from the UK’s National Curriculum Key Stage 2 study program.

At the end of the series, one school will emerge as the smartest school in Britain.

Melissa Hardinge is executive producing for BBC and Simon Marsh for ITV Studios.
