Following the release of its annual hot toy list, mass-market retailer Toys ‘R’ Us is back with a new crop of predictions for the crucial holiday sales period. According to the retailer, the four biggest trends to impact consumers this year are dinosaurs, STEAM-related toys, cooking-themed products and interactive pets.

The impending dinosaur retail onslaught is inspired by hit movies, including this year’s blockbuster Jurassic World and the anticipated release of Disney/Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur, as well as dinosaur-themed shows such as Netflix’s DINOTRUX. As such, TRU expects Mattel’s DINOTRUX Mega Chompin Ty Rux, Spin Master’s Zoomer line and Hasbro’s Jurassic World Hero Mashers Ultimate TRex to be among the big winners.

As for STEAM-related products, which have seen tremendous momentum throughout 2015, TRU lists Anki’s Overdrive Starter Kit, Fisher-Price’s Bright Beats Dance & Move BeatBo and Project Mc2 Dolls (pictured) from MGA Entertainment as items dedicated to advancing inquisitiveness while helping to spur strategic and creative thinking.

The trend of cooking, baking and grilling has been proliferating, thanks to the influx of celebrity chefs to TV, according to Toys ‘R’ Us. Candy Craft Chocolate Pen (Skyrocket), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Oven (Wicked Cool Toys) and Yummy Nummies Mini Kitchen Party Sets (Blip) all roll into this trend.

Meanwhile, the pet craze has far from dwindled, but interactive animals are making a big play at retail this year. Among the anticipated winners are  Spin Master’s Chubbie Puppies Mega Set, Moose Toys’ Clever Keet and Hasbro’s FurReal Friends JJ, My Jumpin’ Pug.

TRU’s forecast is derived from its tracking of global toy purchases and insights into themes seen across pop culture and cultural shifts.
