New-York-based Cupcake Digital has launched a new kids SVOD app for tablets and smart phones that houses a mix of video, storybook, activity and musical content, along with stand-alone apps, from top entertainment brands.

Aimed at kids under 10 (with some slightly older-skewing properties as well), the NetKids app  features popular kids brands like The Smurfs (books/apps), Strawberry Shortcake (books/video), Thomas & Friends (books), Sid the Science Kid (books/video coming soon), RIO (books/apps) and Snoopy (books).

NetKids will also have YouTube video favorites like Driver Digital’s Cool School and Storytime With Ms. Booksy, educational content such as Warren Buffet’s Secret Millionaire’s Club (video) and classic animated TV series starring Madeline, Paddington Bear and Inspector Gadget.

The app’s key features include offline accessibility, kid-friendly browsing, regular updates, exclusive apps/activities, video-on-demand, narrated stories and a safe/customizable environment.

NetKids just went live on the App Store in the US and Canada. As part of its US$7.99 monthly subscription fee, NetKids offers a selection of Cupcake Digital’s premium apps (valued at $1.99 to $3.99 apiece). The ad-free app will also eventually roll out globally on a market-by-market basis.

Amory Millard, EVP of brand/business development at Cupcake Digital, is handling content licensing and brand acquisitions for the app, and the company intends to announce more major brand partnerships in the coming months.
