On the heels of Team USA’s 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup win, Nickelodeon is looking to further engage sports fans with a four-night TV event to find the best teen girl soccer player in the country.
Airing from July 8 to 11, during the NickSports block on Nicktoons, Soccer Superstar is a new coast-to-coast reality competition, hosted by three-time soccer Olympic gold medalist Heather Mitts. The series follows 15 teen girls as they compete for the title of Soccer Superstar.
A panel of judges, including National Soccer Hall of Famer Marcelo Balboa, two-time Olympic gold medalist Angela Hucles and youth development expert Dan Metcalfe, will pick the winner. They’ll also eliminate players based on performance in training, competitive games and soccer challenges, and personality challenges off the field (ballet, beach volleyball).
Produced by Kristopher Lythgoe (American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance), Soccer Superstar also features interviews and training challenges with top athletes, including 2015 Women’s World Cup champions Carli Lloyd (MVP), Alex Morgan and Amy Rodriguez, as well as Olympic beach volleyball silver medalists Jen Kessy and April Ross.
Soccer Superstar is the latest series to join NickSports, a lineup of sports-themed content that launched last September. Airing every Wednesday from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. (ET/PT), the new programming block includes TV series, specials, movies and documentaries from major professional leagues and athletes.
