Wayne, New Jersey-based Toys ‘R’ Us continues its transformation with a wave of global expansion that will see the retailer opening 90 stores across 21 countries by the end of 2014.

The expansion encompasses new sites, the relocation of several stores and 33 new licensed stores, including TRU’s first licensed shop in Namibia and 17 locations in South Africa. The majority of the build is slated for China (where the number of stores will grow to 76 by year’s end) and Southeast Asia—eight new sites are planned for Malaysia, for example.

Over the past year, Toys ‘R’ Us has worked to improve in-store and online shopping experiences as part of its TRU Transformation Strategy, which also saw the hiring of new key executives.

The new stores include both Toys ‘R’ Us locations and side-by-side formats, which bring Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us under one roof, and range in size from 3,000 to 45,000 square feet.

With the addition of the new sites, TRU’s growing global footprint now encompasses 876 US locations, along with  725 international stores and more than 200 licensed stores in 36 countries. A full list of the new and relocated stores opening this year is available here.
