The Gruffalo gets playful with new app

Magic Light Pictures launches Gruffalo: Games on the UK App Store with six puzzle games.
August 28, 2014

The Gruffalo may live in the woods, but that doesn’t mean he’s foreign to new technology. In celebration of the 15th anniversary of children’s picture book The Gruffalo, entertainment company Magic Light Pictures and Stormcloud Games have developed iOS app Gruffalo: Games with six puzzle games that test reaction, logic and problem-solving skills.

Available in the UK App Store for US$4.95, the game targets three- to seven-year-olds and features no in-app purchases or third-party advertising.┬áThis is Magic Light Pictures’ second app game after Room on the Broom: Games, also based on a book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, released last year.

To further mark the occasion of 15 years for The Gruffalo, Magic Light Pictures teamed up with Forestry Commission England to create 28 activity trails in the UK, 15 of which have seven-foot high wooden carved Gruffalo sculptures. The product line recently expanded with branded reading glasses at Specsavers and wooden toys from Poland-based Bajo.

The animated films, The Gruffalo and the Gruffalo’s Child, have also recently found an SVOD home exclusively with Hopster TV. Both tales have been seen by more than 10 million viewers since their first broadcasts on BBC One in 2009 and 2011, respectively, while the first film was nominated for both an Oscar and BAFTA.
