A fourth season of family drama Switched at Birth has been ordered by ABC Family, with the third season wrapping up on August 18.

The original series has been a strong performer for ABC Family, ranking as US cable TV’s number-one series in its time slot among female demos. The series has won a number of awards, including a Peabody Award and a Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming.

Switched at Birth is executive produced by Lizze Weiss (Blue Crush) and Paul Stupin (Dawson’s Creek, Make It or Break It). ABC Family is owned by Disney. At the beginning of this year, Disney launched its first free-TV Disney Channel in Germany. Female-skewing shows like Switched at Birth have helped attract more female viewers to Disney Channel in the region.
