Two new animated kids series, Steven Universe and Uncle Grandpa, from Cartoon Network’s shorts development initiative have been greenlit by the tooncaster and are slated to premiere in 2013.

Both in preproduction, the coming-of-age Steven Universe series comes from Adventure Time writer and storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar while Uncle Grandpa was created by acclaimed Cartoon Network animator Pete Browngardt.

Steven Universe follows the adventures of the youngest member of a team of magical Guardians of the Universe and Uncle Grandpa is based on the Emmy-nominated short of the same name.

The new commissions come after Cartoon Network experienced its most-watched early primetime summer in its 20-year history.
